This course provides an introduction into a variety of human resource management (HRM) topics, including strategic human resource planning, work design, recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, compensation and benefits, health and safety, equity and diversity, and labor relations. A partnering company will be able to select five topics for students to focus on. Each topic will be assigned to two teams. Teams will do research on the topic to address an issue, answer questions, and/or provide recommendations for improvement.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Students will deliver a written report with the issue/topic analysis tailored to an organization and/or a presentation. Deliverables can be negotiated before the start of the course.

  • Is the current HRM system aligned with organizational strategy? What can be done to improve the alignment?
  • What are the recruitment and selection practices? Are they effective?
  • What training and development practices are in place? What changes could be made?
  • How is performance management accomplished? What are advantages and disadvantages of the current system?

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.

Provide feedback to students within two weeks after the report submission.
