Student goals and capabilities

The Department of Psychology at Mount Royal University is seeking to increase our students’ awareness of how the skills and information learned at university apply to the world outside of the classroom. As a result, we are seeking to facilitate student engagement with the public and private sectors during the students’ time in the degree.

The cohort consists primarily of students in the first term of their first year in the Bachelor of Arts: Psychology. Their knowledge of psychology will be developing throughout the term but can be expected to be rudimentary at the start of the term. Their skill sets will generally include

  • Data search skills: the ability to search the internet, in particular, PscyINFO in a variety of situations.
  • Communication Skills: The ability to communicate at a beginning level on a range of psychological topics.
  • Computer Literacy and Information Retrieval: the ability to use a computerized database to find research and other information related to psychological topics.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Your participation in this project will provide you with whatever deliverable(s) you have requested, in addition to connections with one or more students of Mount Royal University. We hope that students will become interested in the work of the community partner with whom they are connected, and that some may find other ways of becoming involved with the community partner.

Project Examples

Requirements

Proposed projects need to meet three requirements.

  • It is related to some aspect of psychology
  • It results in some kind of deliverable that can be graded
  • It is expected to require approximately 10-15 hours for students to complete.

For example, creating a list of recent journal articles on performance anxiety in sport would be suitable (psych-related and a deliverable), while working at an organization’s booth at a conference would not (possibly psych-related, but lacks a deliverable).

In some cases, you may wish to have multiple students tackle the same project. For example, having two students search for internet resources may provide you with a more comprehensive set of results than having only one student search. The only requirement is that students work independently and produce separate deliverables for grading. This project should not involve group work with other students in any form.

Examples of possible ways the students can contribute to your company/agency are:

  • Review of community-partner materials for ease-of-understanding (resulting in marked-up documents)
  • Development of draft information materials for a community partner (e.g., a draft brochure or poster)
  • Compiled literature search on a topic of interest to a community partner
  • Comparison of a community partner’s psychology-related internet site with the internet sites of related agencies
  • A compiled internet search for services relevant to people who suffer from a particular psychological problem

The list is by no means exhaustive and we welcome creative ideas for student involvement in the workplace.
