policy development internationalisation strategy research global reachInternational social work (ISW) is a specialized field of social work practice that seeks to improve the social, political and material well-being of people everywhere. ISW is practiced across geopolitical borders or with in a country (global-local-global) and at all levels of social, political and economic organization. The term used since at least 1928, and scholars have devoted considerable attention to defining international social work. ISW is generally understood to encompass global social problems and policy issues, comparative social policy, international professional organizations, social work practice focused on development of human rights, or migration, especially that in international agencies. ISW is development-focused and, as such, much of international social work practice occurs at the local, state, and provincial levels within individual countries.
