UVA ACM Career Academy, Winter 2026
The University of Virginia’s Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Club, in partnership with Riipen, is launching a co-curricular, project-based learning program focused on real-world computing, AI, and software development challenges. This initiative connects employers with motivated UVA students eager to apply their technical expertise to meaningful projects, building tools, models, and insights that drive innovation. Employers benefit from access to high-performing students capable of solving practical business and technology problems, while gaining early exposure to future talent in computing, AI, and software engineering. About the Learners The program is organized by the UVA Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), with participants drawn from Computer Science programs in both the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the College of Arts & Sciences. Skilled in programming languages such as Python, Java, C++, and JavaScript, and familiar with software architecture and database systems. Many have hands-on experience through hackathons, capstone projects, and ACM-led technical initiatives. Participants are selected based on professionalism, teamwork, and readiness to contribute to applied, industry-aligned projects. Project Details Entry-level scope, designed to match beginner/intermediate project complexity. Runs February 1st –March 27th, 2026 Approximately 25 total hours per learner over the 8-week period. Teams of 4-5 students will be pre-assembled by the program to ensure balanced skills and collaboration. Structured to build practical skills, strengthen workplace readiness, and deliver tangible value to employers. Employer Role Employers play an active, mentoring role throughout the project experience. Students are eager to connect with a dedicated industry contact who can provide insight into professional workflows, tools, and expectations. Time commitment averages 6–8 hours over the 8-week project , and includes: A kickoff/onboarding meeting to introduce the organization’s tech stack, project tools, and workflow expectations. A primary point of contact who can check in regularly (typically once per week) to review progress, answer technical questions, and guide next steps. Periodic feedback on deliverables, ensuring alignment between student work and organizational goals. A final review session or demo , where students present their outcomes and receive feedback on both technical quality and presentation. This level of engagement gives students valuable exposure to industry practices while ensuring the organization receives high-quality, applicable results. What Employers Provide Technical Onboarding: A short orientation or documentation overview of the company’s tools, systems, and coding environment. Dedicated Industry Mentor: A primary contact available for regular check-ins (weekly or biweekly) to provide guidance and feedback. Project Brief: A clear outline of the challenge, objectives, success measures, and technical parameters. Access & Resources: Read-only access to relevant repositories, datasets, or environments (sandbox preferred). Feedback Windows: Quick turnaround on questions during project weeks, plus feedback on interim and final deliverables.
UVA DSAC Career Academy: UX/UI & Software Development Projects, January 2026
Employer Overview The UVA Data Science & Analytics Club (DSAC), in partnership with Riipen, is launching a co-curricular, project-based learning program focused on UX/UI and software development challenges. This initiative provides employers with the opportunity to collaborate with motivated UVA students who are eager to apply their technical and design skills to real-world projects, while employers gain innovative prototypes, design solutions, and a direct connection to emerging talent in software development and user experience. About the students Undergraduate members of the DSAC club at UVA, with concentrations in computer science, data science, and other technology fields. Students have completed coursework in programming (Python, Java, C++), human-centered design, and software development practices. Many have project experience through hackathons, research, and DSAC-led initiatives. Selected participants demonstrate professionalism, collaboration, and readiness to engage in industry-aligned projects. Project Details: Entry-level scope, designed to match beginner project complexity. Runs January 5th-31st : students will complete the project over a 4-week sprint Approximately 20 total hours per learner over the 4-week period. Teams of 5 students will be pre-assembled by the program to ensure balanced skills and collaboration. Structured to provide tangible design/development outputs, build workplace readiness, and deliver real value to employers. Employer Role: Minimal time commitment (~5–6 hours): Provide a clear project brief, user needs, and any technical requirements. Be available for an onboarding session, 24-48 hour response times to student questions, and feedback on the final deliverables. Ensure access to necessary tools, environments (sandbox if needed), and any design assets. What Employers Provide Project Brief : Problem statement, user goals, success metrics, technical scope. Design Assets & Access : Wireframes, brand guidelines, or testing environments as needed. Point of Contact : Available to respond to team questions within 24 hours during Week 1. Biomedical Engineering: Innovation in Context
The University of Virginia’s Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) , in partnership with Riipen , is launching a project-based learning program to complement the technical design experiences students already complete in their master of engineering program. These projects give graduate learners the opportunity to strengthen the adjacent skills employers consistently identify as critical for biomedical engineers; business acumen, regulatory awareness, and stakeholder communication. By engaging with these projects, employers gain access to highly capable students who bring both technical and analytical depth, while students gain exposure to the commercial, ethical, and regulatory considerations that shape how biomedical innovations move from the lab to the marketplace. About the Learners Graduate students enrolled in the Master of Engineering program in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia. Already possess deep technical expertise through design placements and research experiences. Seeking opportunities to expand professional skills that complement their scientific training, particularly in commercialization, communication, and regulatory compliance. Trained in experimental design, product development, and data analysis, and eager to apply those skills in real-world, multidisciplinary contexts. Selected participants demonstrate professionalism, intellectual curiosity, and readiness to contribute to employer-defined challenges. Project Details Entry- to intermediate-level scope, designed to reinforce professional skills adjacent to core biomedical expertise. Runs February 2nd - April 17th, 2026 Approximately 50-70 total hours per learner over the 10-week project period. Teams of 6 students will be pre-assembled to balance technical, analytical, and communication skills. Projects are structured to provide tangible outcomes for employers while supporting UVA’s goals of career readiness and experiential learning. Employer Role Employers play a critical role in helping students engage authentically with real-world challenges. Rather than providing a fully defined problem, ideal partners share access to the context, stakeholders, and data that allow students to analyze the environment and define the problem for themselves . This reflective, discovery-oriented process mirrors how challenges emerge in the workplace—helping students build both confidence and professional judgment. Typical time commitment is 5-7 hours over the 10-week project , and includes: Kickoff Meeting: Introduce the organization, its context, and the challenge area—framing the opportunity but allowing students to determine the specific problem statement. Stakeholder Access: Facilitate short interviews, informal conversations, or observational opportunities so students can hear different perspectives and validate their problem framing. Information Sharing: Provide data, documentation, or process artifacts that help students understand the system they’re analyzing. Check-ins & Feedback: Review written updates or early drafts to confirm the students’ understanding of context and direction. Final Review: Participate in the closing presentation or discussion to provide feedback on both findings and the problem-solving process. This approach ensures students develop their analytical, communication, and problem-definition skills while producing actionable insights for your organization. What Employers Provide Challenge Context: An introduction to an organizational area, process, or question that students can explore and define further. Stakeholder Access: Connection to 1–2 relevant team members or departments for observation or brief interviews. Data & Documentation: Access to datasets, reports, or other materials that inform how the organization operates within the chosen area. Point of Contact: A single representative who coordinates access and responds to student questions within 24–48 hours. UVA Data Science Micro-Internship Program
The UVA School of Data Science, in partnership with Riipen, is launching a co-curricular, project-based learning program for students in the undergraduate Data Science program. This initiative provides US-based employers with the opportunity to engage highly motivated students who are eager to apply their analytical and problem-solving skills to real-world challenges, while providing employers with fresh insights, innovative solutions, and a pipeline of emerging talent. About the Learners Learners in this program are in their second year of college and have just completed their first semester of dedicated data science coursework in the UVA School of Data Science B.S. program. By the time they reach the project stage, they will have: Foundational Knowledge – Coursework in statistics and probability applied to introductory data problems. Programming Skills – Hands-on experience with Python, R, and SQLite for data wrangling, cleaning, and visualization. Data Preparation – Ability to clean, transform, and structure datasets, including handling missing values and assessing quality. Exploratory Data Analysis – Competence in EDA to identify trends, patterns, and outliers. Visualization & Communication – Ability to create basic dashboards and visual summaries, and present results clearly. These learners bring professionalism, curiosity, and a solutions-oriented mindset. While still early in their training, they are capable of delivering beginner-level data science projects such as data cleaning, exploratory analysis, and basic modelling, within the scope of a short, 2-week project. Project Details Entry-level scope, designed to match beginner project complexity. Runs January 2–16, 2026 : students dedicate one week full-time to core project work, followed by one week of lighter effort for polishing and final deliverables. Employers should expect to attend a final presentation between January 16th-23rd Employers should expect that student groups may want to meet in December to discuss the project, but the official kick-off will be January 2nd Approximately 50 total hours per learner over the 2-week period. Teams of 3 students will be pre-assembled by the program to ensure balanced skills and collaboration. Employers may submit projects for consideration; student teams will rank preferences, and 5 projects will be selected from an anticipated pool of 7 proposals. Structured to build practical skills, strengthen workplace readiness, and deliver tangible value to employers. Employer Role Employer commitment is minimal; typically limited to providing a project brief, dataset (with data dictionary), and a few light check-ins with the student team. Time commitment is ~5-6 hours , with the heaviest interaction during the full-time project week (Week 1) and lighter touch points in Week 2 for polishing and approval. Employer partners should be to attend the student presentation of work sometime between January 16th-23rd, 2026. What Employers Provide Data & Documentation - A complete dataset with a data dictionary (document outlining the data structure, content, and variable definitions through metadata such as names, types, sizes, classifications, and relationships), delivered before project selection so students can make informed choices (template found here ) Project Brief – Clear problem statement, objectives, success metrics, constraints, and available tools/access.
