Bio

For over 20 years, I have worked as an Executive Director of arts organizations. I was the first Executive Director of: Harcourt House Arts Centre, the Art Gallery of St. Albert, SNAP (Society of Northern Alberta Print Artists) and now I am the first Executive Director of the Edmonton Short Film Festival (ESFF). It was and is exciting and challenging to be involved with these organizations in their initial stages of operation and to ensure their continued successful growth. No day is ever the same: always new challenges, obstacles, and ideas that add spice and flavour to the job. Multi-tasking is paramount, as is the ability to change roles quickly. Each organization brought with it new experiences, people, and communities. Throughout my arts management career, I maintained my work as a professional visual artist and I have been exhibiting my artwork at public and artist-run galleries throughout Alberta since 1991.

Reaching a New Audience

As with everyone else in the world, the Edmonton Short Film Festival has had to make substantial changes to our programming and events. We understand the importance of transitioning to an on-line environment. We have been offering programming at live in person events in both 2020 and 2021, but these can no longer take place on the scale they did in the past for the foreseen future. Establishing an on-line presence for our programs and events will assist us in reaching a broader audience. We know who our live in person audience is - but this may have changed for 2021 - and we also need to determine our potential on-line audience for marketing and promoting future events. The shift towards consumer/audience driven on-line content was already happening pre covid – Covid just pushed it into the realm of must do or not survive very quickly. Establishing a strong on-line presence will ensure that our audience can access our events and as mentioned, we will be able to reach a much larger audience. On-line content removes many barriers including – mobility, travel, location (anyone in the world can access, don't need to be in the same city), and mental health (for example those with social anxiety can participate on their own and not attend a busy crowded noisy event).
