Osteoboon was founded in 02015 by Kevin when he matriculated as a first-year Osteopathic Medical Student (OMS-1 in the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, the most common system for the symbolic representation of numbers in the world for the past 1,500 years or so, or OMS-I in the Roman numeral system that was phased out of most applications more than 700 years ago but which is still in common use in osteopathic medicine today).

As a mathematician, computer scientist, nuclear engineer, submarine officer, and physicist, Kevin quickly recognized in 02015 that osteopathic medicine was still steeped in some archaic traditions (eg. Roman numerals) that most professional communities had discarded in favor of more effective traditions with the dawn of the 20th century. Upon recognizing this, Kevin perceived some opportunities to improve osteopathic medicine using some traditions from other professional communities that most in the medical community are unaware of. For example, the concept of version control is outside the experience of most clinicians and medical school faculty members. So when a team of 6 medical students is tasked today with creating and editing a single document, they usually accomplish this task without edit deconfliction tools like CVS, RCS, or git.

Osteoboon teaches medical students and other healthcare professionals how to collaborate more effectively using free and open source software tools like git. With better collaboration comes better teamwork in medicine and better care for patients.
